The economy and society
Immigration, work and welfare are areas which have considerable consequences for the shaping of society. During the Forum, these areas will be explored from among the many topics which relate the economy to society.
When individuals escape from hunger or persecution, or when “brains” are not able to find an appropriate job in their country, what are the economic causes of emigration? And what are the consequences of the fact that migrations make some societies wealthier while making others poorer?
When there are barriers to entering a job which don’t allow for a change in generations, how is it possible to select candidates based on merit and not on the inheritance of a “position”? Since a vital economic system cannot function in this way, it tends to look for flexibility in the system and ends up creating job insecurity.
This phenomenon works to the detriment not only of young people’s prospects for the future but also harms the system’s potential, with the result that the economy grows less than it could. What kind of new welfare system can be created, then, between the pressures of global competition and the crises of public finance?
