Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa

Minister of Economics and Finance
Born in Belluno on July 23, 1940, Tomaso Padoa-Schioppa received a Bachelor degree from Bocconi University in Milan in 1966, and a Master of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1970. He was a member of the executive board of the European Central Bank from 1998 to 2005. Prior to that he was head of CONSOB (National Commission for Corporations and the Stock Exchange) (1997-98), Vice-Director General of Banca d’Italia (1984-1997) and under-secretary of economic and financial affairs of the European Commission (1979-1983). After leaving the ECB and before becoming Minister, he was President of Notre Europe (Paris), Senior Fellow of the International Affairs Institute (IAI, Rome), President of the IASC Foundation (International Accounting Standard Committee) and Senior Adviser and Member of the Advisory Board of the Promontory Financial Group, LLC. He is the author of numerous books and articles. His most recent works include: ‘Europa, una pazienza attiva’ (2006); ‘L’Euro e la sua banca centrale’ (2004); ‘Regulating Finance’ (2004); ‘Dodici Settembre’ (2002); ‘Europa, forza gentile’ (2001).
