Silvio Garattini
Founder and director of the “Mario Negri” Pharmaceutical Research Institute
Born in Bergamo in 1928, Silvio Garattini founded the Mario Negri Institute in 1963. A doctor and freelance professor of chemotherapy and pharmacology, Garattini was an assistant and aid at the Institute of Pharmacology, University of Milan, until 1962.
The author of hundreds of scientific works published in national and international journals, and numerous volumes in the field of pharmacology, she is the founder of the European Organization for Research on Treatment of Cancer. In the past decades she has been a member of many organizations, including: the Committee of Biology and Medicine of the National Council of Research (C.N.R.), the National Health Council in Italy, and the Commission of the Prime Ministership for Research Policy in Italy.
She has also been a fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of many other national and international organizations.
