Sergio Romano
Ambassador, historian and editorialist for the Corriere della Sera and Panorama
Born in Vicenza in 1929, with a degree in law from the University of Milan, Sergio Romano worked as a journalist in Milan, Paris, London and Vienna and than began his diplomatic career in 1954. From 1977 to 1983 he was the director general for Cultural Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After having been a representative to NATO from 1983 to 1985 he became the ambassador to Moscow, during the Perestroyka years, until 1989. As a historian his interests have been focused on Italian and French history of the 19th and 20th century. He has also taught at the universities of Florence, Sassari, Pavia, Berkeley and Harvard. From 1992 to 1998 he was professor of the history of international relations at Bocconi University in Milan. He has received honorary degrees from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques in Paris, the University of Macerata and the Institute of Universal History of the Academy of Science, Russia. He collaborates with Limes, a journal covering strategy and international relations, Affari Esteri, Corriere del Ticino and Le Matin in Lausanne. His books include two biographies: “Giolitti, lo Stile del Potere” and “Gentile, la Filosofia al Potere” and two papers on soviet affairs: “La Russia in Bilico” (Il Mulino 1989) and “Il Declino dell’URSS come Potenza Mondiale e le sue Conseguenze”.
