Sergio Marchionne
Managing Director of Fiat
He came to Turin as the managing director in 2004, but he had already been an independent member of the Lingotto board of directors since May 2003. Previously he was the managing director of SGS in Geneva, a subsidiary company of the IFIL group, world leader in inspection, verification and certification services, which he reorganized in just two years. Marchionne was born in 1952 in Chieti, however his family moved to Canada shortly after his birth. He received a degree in law from the Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, an MBA from the University of Windsor in Canada and has been a public accountant since 1985. Since 1987 he has been an attorney-at-law and a lawyer in the Ontario region. Marchionne had his first professional experiences in Canada. From 1983 to 1985 he worked as a public accountant and a tax expert at Deloitte Touche. From 1985 to 1988 he was controller and then director of development at the Lawson Mardon Group in Toronto, and between 1989 and 1990 he was the executive vice-president of Glenex Industries. Up until 1992 he was the vice-president for finance and the chief financial officer at Acklands Limited. In Toronto, (’92-’94) he was the chief financial officer at the Lawson Group, which was purchased by Alusuisse Lonza in 1994. The same Algroup of Zurich, Switzerland, where he was managing director from1994 to 2000. Following that he guided the Lonza Group Ltd, (which had separated from Alusuisse Lonza), first as managing director as then as president.
