Roberto Maroni
Lega Nord Padania Representative
Roberto Maroni began his political career at the start of the ‘80’s, and was one of the first to become involved with the newly-born Lega Lombarda party of Umberto Bossi. Born on March 15, 1955 in Varese, with a degree in Law, Roberto Maroni was the provincial secretary of the Lega Nord of Varese from 1990 to 1993 and then became the city councilman of Varese. Elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1992, he became president of the Lega Nord deputies. After the Polo’s gains in the 1994 elections, he became Vice-Premier and Minister of the Interior for the Berlusconi administration.
In 1996 he was confirmed as a deputy in the proportional list of the Lega in the 3rd constituency (Lombardy 1). He then became a member of the parliamentary judiciary council, the 14th EU political permanent commission, the parliamentary commission for allegation proceedings and the parliamentary commission for constitutional reform. In 1999 he became the coordinator of the Lega’s national political office. During the Berlusconi administration which ended in May 2006, Maroni was Minister of Labour and Social Policy (Welfare).
Since May 3, 2006 he has been the head of the Lega Nord Padania parliamentary group.
