Livia Turco
Health Minister
Born in 1955 in Cuneo, Livia Turco became the provincial secretary of the FGCI of Turin in 1978. From 1983 to 1985 she was the regional councillor for Piedmont and from 1985 to 1986 she was a city councillor. She has held numerous roles as part of the PCI party. In 1986 she joined the national leadership guided by Alessandro Natta and was the head of women’s issues first for the PCI and then for the PDS parties from 1986 to 1994. In November 2001 Liva Turco joined the national leadershop of Democratici di Sinistra, where she headed the welfare department. She was then elected as a member of parliament (from the 10th to 14th administrations). During the 10th administration she was a member of the justice commission, and in the 11th administration she was on the public and private labour commission. In the 12th administration she was a member of the Progressive-Federative parliamentary group, the labour commission and the special commission regarding infancy. From 1995 to 1996 she was Chairman of the commission for parity and equal opportunities for the prime ministership.
In the 13th administration, with Prodi, she became Minister for social solidarity. She was reconfirmed for the D’Alema administration and for the second Amato administration. During this period she focused her work on issues regarding the family, infancy, disability and immigration. She has promoted many of the laws which have marked the policies of center-left administrations, in particular those regarding immigration (law n. 40 of 1998, better known as the Turco-Napolitano law), social assistance (law n.328 of 2000 for the realization of an integrated system of interventions and social services) and support for maternity and paternity (law n. 53 of 2000). Since April 28th, 2006 (15th administration) she has been a senator of Italy.
In 2005 with Paola Tavella she wrote the book, “I nuovi Italiani. L’Immigrazione, i pregiudizi, la convivenza” (Mondadori publishers).
