Giulio Giorello
Professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Milan
Born in Milan in 1945, Giulio Girello received a degree in Philosophy in 1968 and a degree in Mathematics in 1971. He has taught rational mechanics in the faculty of Engineering (Pavia), literature and philosophy (Milan), and science (Catania). Currently he holds the chair of Philosophy of Science at the University of Milan, following Ludovico Geymonat who held it before him. From initial research in philosophy and the history of mathematics, his interests have broadened into issues regarding scientific change and the relationship between science, ethics and politics. He collaborates with the Corriere della Sera. His books include: Parabole e catastrofi, intervista a René Thom (in collaboration with Simona Morini, Milan 1981), Lo spettro e il libertino. Teologia, matematica e libero pensiero (Milan 1985), (with Ludovico Geymonat) Le ragioni della scienza (Rome-Bari 1986). He has edited a new edition of the Areopagitica of John Milton (Laterza, 1987) and, together with Marco Mondadori, the essay On Liberty by John Stuart Mill (1981 and 1991). He has published an Introduction to the Philosophy of Science (Bompiani, 1994) and Philosophy of Science in the XX Century (Laterza, 1995). For Raffaello Cortina: Prometeo, Ulisse, Gilgamesh.
