Film maker
Born in Bergamo in 1931 from a family of farmers, Ermanno Olmi is one of the most important Italian film makers. His latest film, Cento Chiodi, which has just been released in Italian movie theaters, tells the story of a professor at the University of Bologna who finds himself in the middle of a difficult investigation which causes him to leave everything and go to live near the Po river, in a small village. The film aims to be a transposition of Jesus Christ’s life. Ermanno Olmi’s fame was consacrated with the film, L’albero degli zoccoli which won the Palma d’oro (“Golden Palm”) at Cannes and the Cesar Award for best foreign film. This film gave a realistic yet poetic picture of the farming life which Olmi grew up in. Olmi also won the Leone d’Argento (“Silver Lion”) with Lunga vita alla signora and the Leone d’Oro (“Golden Lion”) with the Leggenda del Santo Bevitore in 1987 and in 1988.
