Why Milan

By Dario Di Vico
To offer Milan the gift of hosting an international event: this is what inspired Università Bocconi and the Corriere della Sera to put the International Forum “The Economy and the Open Society” on the calendar for next May 9th through 12th. The four-day event will put Milan at the center of attention of economists, entrepreneurs, union leaders and politicians.
The time is ripe for this event: the economy has started up again and entrepreneurs have revived the “made in Italy” market. For the FMI inspectors who visited recently, our country is experiencing an economic boom, a result which is worth much more now than in the past. In fact, this is the first post-euro boom achieved without depreciating the euro. To open, then, doesn’t mean to die. In fact when we have truly become Italianeuropeans we will discover that the Italian decline was due to protections and certainly not to excessive openness of the markets.
This will be the main topic of the four-day event in Milan which will not only involve the entire city and present a cast of exceptional speakers but also provide fuel for another ambitious project, which is to contribute to increasing debate - on opportunities (and risks, as well) - in the society at large, and not just among the economic èlite. The fact that the organizers have decided to conduct this conversation not only in university halls but also in a charity organization, a labour center, a high school and the auditorium of a clinic, demonstrates true intellectual honesty.

Does globalization, aside from overcoming geographical, political and cultural barriers, also help make a society more open? What are, or are becoming, the strategic resources of the current international context?

Economics and citizens
Education is a right, but also a duty (according to the Italian Constitution) and an opportunity for each individual. If quality schools produce better citizens, how can the educational system be improved?

Economics and politics
It is good politics that makes for good economics. Political scientists, sociologists and economists ask what it takes to have an economy that is healthy, growing, competitive and able to ensure both opportunity and rights to all members of the community.
